One reason we were inspired to open a small press was our intention to print a magazine or paper that would allow us to better understand our surroundings and reach further afield to generate discussion with people from all around the world. While still an idea in progress, we invite writers, illustrators, translators and anyone else who would like to be part of this project to contact us and help us imagine the content and form of our magazine or paper.
We know we want the magazine to be multilingual because we want it to address not only the Italian-speaking inhabitants of Cagliari but also acknowledge the diversity of voices that Caligari and its Mediterranean surroundings represent. We want it to be reprinted, translated, altered and distorted, like a radio signal. This is a call for ideas and content, but it's also an invitation to groups or individuals who want to print and distribute this magazine within their own communities. We’re building an open and inclusive network of printers and readers. If you want to be part of this, get in touch here.
Besides providing coordinates, the names of streets, squares, neighborhoods and buildings draw a map of historical events. But what history do they tell? From whose point of view?
In the wake of George Floyd's barbaric murder, the Black Lives Movement (re)exploded in the US and across the globe, forcing a reckoning not only with racisim and police brutality, but also with the way cities commemorate history. As statues went down around the world, even in our city the issue of who we choose to remember in our public space got some traction, with some questioning (again) the presence of a statue of Carlo Felice in Piazza Yenne, or the return of the fasci littori to Piazza Gramsci.
We would like to create a study group to map Cagliari's toponyms and monuments, as a starting point to examine the connections between Sardinian colonial history and Italian colonialist history up until today, and start imagining a future free from colonialism. The result could be a publication or a series of publications.
